Reading Log
This year, I will expect the 5th grade to keep track of their reading progress by using reading logs. Their reading log can always be found in their S.T.A.R. binder. In this reading log, students will be required to write the following:
1) The book title
2) The reading/lexile level
3) Their reading counts quiz score/#of points received for that quiz
4) If they choose to use this book for a reader's report by writing a "Y" for "yes" or "N" for "no"
5) The date they begin reading the book
6) The date they finish reading the book
7) A parent signature once they have completed reading the book
The purpose of the reading log is so the students, the parents, and myself can see the reading progress of each child. They are required to choose books within a 5th grade reading level or higher (each student's reading abilities vary). A reading/lexile level measures a student's ability to read and understand a text with ease.
NOTE: I am fully aware all students have various reading levels so based on the assessments I administer, I will be able to better help in the reading development of your child.

The reason I have you record your reading/ lexile level is so that you continue to read books that challenge your reading fluency and comprehension. Reading books below your reading level will not challenge you or prepare you to read more complex books. The average reading level for a 5th grader ranges between Q-W and the lexile level ranges from 330-1280. You can find the reading/lexile level of ANY of your children's book by using "Book Wizard" (explained below).
A reading log is considered complete once they reach the number of reading counts points determined for that trimester.
Also, out of all the books in their reading log, students must use one of them to write a reader's report (explained below) that must be completed by the end of each trimester.

- Read a page and understand it without rereading it several times?
- Summarize each chapter to a friend aloud or by writing it?
- Make connections, draw inferences, make predictions, visualize the events?

REading Counts
Students must complete 20 points by the end of the first trimester, 25 points by the end of the second trimester, and 30 points by the end of the third trimester. They will record their quiz scores and the number of points they receive for each book in their reading log so that students, parents, and myself can view the progress of each student.

REader's Reports
Reader's Reports are a way for students to actively engage with the text they are reading. Students will have to complete a tic-tac-toe reader's report where they will choose three activities in a tic-tac-toe design. Some of the questions require students to write summaries, share personal connections and curiosities, draw pictures, use their imagination, etc. They may choose any three questions just as long as they are three across, three down, or three diagonal. Also, they must follow all directions and answer each question fully or they will have to re-do it.
One reader's report must be completed for each trimester. It will be due two weeks before the end of each trimester so that there will be time for students to re-do it if necessary.

How do I find the reading/Lexile level of a book?
The reading log requires students to write down the reading level of each book they read which should be within a 5th grade reading level or higher. Below is how you can find the reading level of a book.
EXAMPLE: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
1) Google "Book Wizard"
2) Click "Guided Reading Level A-Z" or "Lexile Measure"
3) Type in the title of your book
4) Find your book and click it
5) Guided Reading level: Z
